Concept idea
Sustainable energy supply and decarbonization of agricultural operations
An agricultural business combines agrivoltaics with its own hydrogen production to cover its energy needs with zero emissions. The green hydrogen produced on site is stored and used for the farm’s own power supply and, in the long term, to operate hydrogen tractors or agricultural equipment. The farm thus reduces its dependence on fossil fuels, lowers operating costs and positions itself as a pioneer for sustainable agriculture.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions about hydrogen
Green hydrogen offers agriculture the opportunity to harmonize energy supply, climate protection and profitability. By using self-generated solar power to produce hydrogen, farms can cover electricity, heat and mobility without emissions – independently of the electricity grid and rising energy prices. Whether for supplying stables, greenhouses or agricultural vehicles: hydrogen systems are modular, safe and eligible for subsidies in many cases. They increase energy self-sufficiency, safeguard critical processes in the event of a power failure and make an active contribution to environmental protection and nature conservation – for sustainable agriculture that is fit for the future.
What is a complete hydrogen system?
A modular complete hydrogen system consists of several coordinated components for the production, storage and use of green hydrogen directly on site. It typically comprises an electrolyzer for hydrogen production, a pressure storage tank and a fuel cell or another utilization unit, e.g. for heat or process energy supply.
From what size of business is a hydrogen system worthwhile?
Even medium-sized farms with their own PV electricity and high energy requirements – e.g. for barn technology, greenhouse heating or e-mobility – benefit from hydrogen solutions. It is particularly economical with high self-consumption and a good solar power yield.
What happens in the event of a power grid fault in the yard?
An integrated hydrogen backup system can reliably take over the emergency power supply for milking robots, ventilation, cooling or control technology – independent of the grid and emission-free.
Which agricultural machines can be powered by hydrogen?
Tractors, farm loaders and transporters can be powered by hydrogen. Stationary machines such as drying systems, heating systems or combined heat and power plants can also use hydrogen – directly or via fuel cells. Hydrogen-capable heating systems or fuel cell heating systems can be used to generate emission-free process heat – ideal for greenhouses, drying or stable heating, especially in combination with your own PV electricity.
How does the refueling of hydrogen-powered vehicles work?
Refueling takes place via a mobile or stationary H₂ tank system in the yard. The process only takes a few minutes, is safe and comparable to refueling a gas vehicle.
Are there funding programs for hydrogen systems in agriculture?
Yes, there are various subsidies available at federal, state and EU level – for example for electrolysers, storage systems, vehicles or heating networks. Individual project advice can help with the application process.
