Hydrogen for aircraft operation

Installation of a complete H₂ system at an airfield

Modular hydrogen plant for the local production, storage and use of green hydrogen. A 150 kW electrolyzer generates H₂ with PV electricity, which is used to refuel test aircraft. The aim is also to reduce energy costs, increase security of supply and promote emission-free aviation. The airport benefits from a technological edge, funding opportunities and a climate-friendly positioning.

Objective

An aviation company is developing emission-free aircraft engines at the airport and testing them under real-life conditions. In order to reduce dependence on external hydrogen supplies, a local hydrogen infrastructure is being set up together with the airport operator. The aim is the climate-friendly, decentralized production of green hydrogen directly on site.

Solution

Installation of a complete modular hydrogen system consisting of:

  • 200 kW PEM electrolyzer for the production of green hydrogen
  • Storage unit with pressurized tanks for hydrogen storage
  • Refueling unit on the tarmac for test aircraft and prototypes
  • The system is powered by electricity from a newly installed photovoltaic system.
  • Surpluses can be used for the airport’s own power supply via reconversion.

Advantages

  • Reduction of energy costs and logistics expenses
  • Strengthening the location as an innovation hub for climate-friendly aviation
  • Contribution to CO₂-neutral energy supply for the airport
  • Access to funding for sustainable mobility
